Detailed description of what diamond cut service is below, if diamond rims can be repaired and how diffetent diamond cut rims from painted rims or powder coated rims.
Here at Cowichan Right Rim Repair we offer numerous customization services and diamond cut wheels are among our customers’ most popular choice for wheel refurbishing. A longer and more precise process than powder coating, diamond cut wheels is the removing of a thin layer of aluminum from the rim with the help of special equipment called a diamond cutting machine or CNC lathe machine. This machine spins the alloy rim at very high speed. The sharp blade moves closer and closer to the surface and cut the wheel where required. Diamond cutting entails, firstly, the removal of any pre-existing imperfections from the rim edges or face of the wheel. If a rim is in repairable condition, we may use rim welding to assist in the cutting preparation.
The diamond cut rim has a shiny alloy finish, which is then lacquered or clear coated for corrosion prevention. The diamond cut rim has very fine lines similar to the surface of CD on the face or lip. Diamond cutting can be combined with different color powder coating which produces spectacular eye-catching wheel finishes. Customers who already have diamond cut wheels on their cars can do repairing machined face wheels as well.
Although diamond cut alloy wheels are favorable, not all wheels can be diamond cut. Your vehicle’s qualification relies heavily on the condition and profile of the face of the wheel; however, we can assess your alloy wheels to determine whether we can provide you with the wheel repair. Another limitation to diamond cutting service is whether or not your wheels have been cut before. Because the process of diamond cutting requires the removal of metal from the front face of the wheel, if your wheel has been re-cut too many times, it may compromise the integrity and success of the process. It is also important to note that rim refurbishment of diamond cut wheels is not possible as a simple touch-up; hence the lengthier process in comparison to powder coated or painted rims. Finally, if your wheels are in poor condition, it may require additional work such as chemical stripping or we may decline the upgrade in its entirety. Diamond cut wheels will not maintain their finish as long as powder coated rims. Minimal damage can result in leaks or milky patches on the lacquer-finished area. However, repairs are possible. If you are unsure about damage to your refurbished wheels, we can advise, subject to our expert opinion, on how to best proceed.
If you have damaged diamond cut wheels there are viable solutions for preserving your rims. If you have the traditional silver wheel paint with diamond cut alloys, we may suggest powder coating the rims in bright silver with gloss lacquer. In this process, before the coating, the damages are grinded and polished to bare metal to remedy all imperfections. Customers are often surprised by the seamlessness of this wheel refurbishment process. We do not do rim polishing but we can refinish polishing aluminum wheels with powder coating and diamond cutting services.
